I recently became the happy owner of a Pro-Ject RPM-4 turntable — bought it used and it’s in really good condition, but there’s one issue: during transportation the tonearm settings got a bit messed up. I’m afraid of damaging the stylus or setting the tracking force incorrectly, which could ruin my records. Could someone explain how to properly set the anti-skating on this model so the sound is well balanced and there’s no channel distortion? Maybe there’s a manual for it?

Also, are there any specifics when it comes to lubricating the platter bearing? It feels like it doesn’t spin as smoothly as it should — can I use regular machine oil or is that a bad idea? And one more thing: where can I find the exact factory specs for suspension/setup on this turntable? There’s a lot of conflicting info online, and I’d like to do everything properly according to factory standards so I don’t mess up this great piece of gear due to my lack of experience.

The RPM-4 is really a classic! If you get it right it can sound like a thousand-dollar model. Regarding the bearing, be very careful not to pour normal oil in it. That is a Pro-Ject oil only matter as it is quite different in terms of viscosity. The tonearm setup is delicate, especially with the small weight on the string.
