Pro-Ject RPM-4 setup help (manual)

HozzászólásSzerző: Maxin585 » 2026. ápr. 12., vas. 20:09

Hi vinyl lovers! I recently became the happy owner of a Pro-Ject RPM-4 turntable — bought it used and it’s in really good condition, but there’s one issue: during transportation the tonearm settings got a bit messed up. I’ve only dealt with simpler turntables before where everything was automatic, and here the elegant design and all the fine adjustments are honestly a bit intimidating. I’m afraid of damaging the stylus or setting the tracking force incorrectly, which could ruin my records. Could someone explain how to properly set the anti-skating on this model so the sound is well balanced and there’s no channel distortion? Maybe there’s a manual for it?

Also, are there any specifics when it comes to lubricating the platter bearing? It feels like it doesn’t spin as smoothly as it should — can I use regular machine oil or is that a bad idea? And one more thing: where can I find the exact factory specs for suspension/setup on this turntable? There’s a lot of conflicting info online, and I’d like to do everything properly according to factory standards so I don’t mess up this great piece of gear due to my lack of experience.

The RPM-4 is really a classic! If you get it right it can sound like a thousand-dollar model. Regarding the bearing, be very careful not to pour normal oil in it. That is a Pro-Ject oil only matter as it is quite different in terms of viscosity. The tonearm setup is delicate, especially with the small weight on the string. To be on the safe side and make sure you get the angles and the stylus overhang right, check out the service manual for Pro-ject Audio RPM-4 on ManualMachine website. That will help you dial everything in properly and keep your records in perfect condition. Regarding the anti-skating, usually it is set according to needle mass. Typically, it's set to the second or third notch on the rod. Btw, what cartridge are you running?
